United States - 1997
Director - Hark Tsui
Columbia Pictures Home Video, 1997, VHS
Run Time - 1 hour, 33 minutes
Followers of Hong Kong cinema (of which I am only peripherally) will recognize the name Hark Tsui as that behind a number of epic and popular Chinese films. As a director, producer and actor he has been prolific and successful at re-envisioning the Chinese cinema. Although not his first United Statesian release, Double Team was definitely his worst. Well to tell the truth, I haven't seen his other Van Damme picture, Knock Off, co-starring Rob Schneider, but it sounds better already. Amazingly they both had theatrical releases.

This was a tough sit, but Mickey Rourke was funny in it.
ReplyDeleteYou're not kidding tough. I was so excited for a Hark film and thought the absurdity of the actor combo would make it much more fun, but what a disappointment.
ReplyDeleteI hear the other Dennis Rodman "action" flick "Simon Sez" is even worse. Co-starring the laugh vacuum himself, Dane Cook.
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen that one. I just heard from a serious Hark fan that Knock Off is really good if you know Hark's philosophy on film. I guess he got VD to say "I'm the knock-off king" on screen as a sort of inside joke on VD's career. Plus there's exploding jeans and Rob Schneider.
ReplyDeleteha! I have a soft spot for this one. The novelty of Dennis Rodman "acting" just does it for me.
